Getaway 2012 (Wednesday Afternoon)

We've had a great week so far!  Yesterday was probably the coldest late June day in Garden City history.  The low temps combined with a super strong wind to make a pretty bad day for the beach. However, this didn't stop our students from having a great time during their free time.

Before Tuesday evening worship all of our small groups had their first Prayer Gathering of the week.  What an incredible site to see 159 students and 32 small group leaders spread out all over campus praying together before worship.  During worship Pastor Jeff continued his series on the Gospel.  He specifically addressed the doctrine of the atonement last night.  Many of our students were moved to think about how Christ earned their salvation by his life and death for the first time last night.

After worship our students headed out for some free time and then came back for round 2 of Late Nite games.  The boys have a pretty commanding lead right now with only 1 night of games left.

Be sure to check back tomorrow to see what else is going on at camp.  There are pictures from camp up at and lots of twitter posts with the hashtag #getaway2012.  Sermons through this morning are also available here.

Getaway 2012 (Tuesday Afternoon)

159 students, 32 small group leaders, and over 50 additional people helping anywhere from in the kitchen to on stage arrived at at camp yesterday afternoon to kick off Getaway 2012.  We had a great first night!

Camp really got started after dinner when our students met in their small groups for the very first time.  it was amazing to see 16 small groups full of Parkwood students and their leaders spread out all over Garden City Chapel.  After the first Bible study we packed into the worship room for our first worship service lead by our worship band and Pastor Jeff.  Since the theme of Getaway 2012 is "The Way" Pastor Jeff is preaching through a clear explanation of the gospel during the night services.

After worship we had our first Late Nite with the boys taking a 2-1 advantage over the girls.  Then it was off to bed and back up this morning for breakfast, morning worship, recreation (team building games), and small group time.

Getaway Update (Thursday Afternoon)

The beach was much calmer yesterday during free time so more of our students headed out to the ocean for some fun in the sun and waves.  Several of our students (and adults) also participated in a basketball tournament in addition to the other fun free time activities.

After free time and dinner our students headed to their small groups for a time of prayer before coming into evening worship.  During the worship service Pastor Chad allowed students to stand and read passages from the Bible over the rest of the group (this has become a camp favorite for many of our students).  Pastor Jeff preached from Ephesians 5.  He challenged the camp to realize that the days we live in are full of evil and that God has given us instructions about avoiding that evil.

After worship and some ice cream form Painters our interns hosted the last Late Nite of Getaway 2011.  The score was tied 3-3 going into the night but the girls dominated night 3 and walked away the Late Nite champions.

This morning I closed out the Esther story with a challenge to die to Christ to truly be used by him.

The last recreation of camp (which is happened right now) is a photo scavenger hunt so we have teams running all over Garden City right now.
